Слайд 2Location in New Zealand
New Zealand is an island country in

the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (the North

Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands. Due to its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, many of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and introduced mammals. With a mild maritime climate, the land was mostly covered in forest. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks owe much to the uplift of land and volcanic eruptions caused by the Pacific and Indo-Australian Plates clashing underfoot.

The Capital of New Zealand

Wellington is the capital city and third most populous urban area of New Zealand, although it is likely to have surpassed Christchurch due to the exodus following the Canterbury Earthquake. It is at the southwestern tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Rimutaka Range. It is home to 389,700 residents.

Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand, reaching 3,754 metres.

Legally they have equal status, but "God Defend New Zealand" is more commonly used, and is popularly referred to as "the national anthem". The anthem has English and Māori lyrics, with slightly different meanings.
